Statement Of Intent

Statement Of Intent

Most coming of age dramas focus on a problem or focus on the main character reaching adulthood and facing typical student difficulties such as school problems because of this, the audience for coming of age dramas tend to be younger demographic as they're probably going through this stage or have passed this stage. Coming of age dramas also have a problem that is central to the main character and causes him difficulty throughout the film, however, I plan to introduce more problems than one in the trailer to create a larger narrative and create a more interesting narrative for the audience. For example, one difficulty would be trying to fit into a new environment another one being potential school problems, such as failing in school.

Also, the soundtrack or background music would be a variation of music typically within coming of age drama there tends to be a variety of music used for coming of age dramas when compared to other genres such as action, horror and thriller, as Coming of Age dramas sound tend not to be a key convention and therefore I have chosen to have clear breaks with diegetic and non-diegetic, as the trailer tends to have a certain amount of music played to get viewers hyped around the release of the film but also the use of sound to set the mood of the film in certain key scenes.

Most Coming of Age films tend to use typical White-American actors and actresses and therefore I plan to subvert these typical ideas and stereotypes of having such characters and plan on using actors of Black, Asian, Minority, Ethnicity, (BAME) to make this film more relatable as in the majority of the new films at festivals it consists of ethnic minority and therefore by creating a film using these actors I will be able appeal to a wider audience, as well my target audience may be able to create a sense of personal relationship and identity with the characters.  Around the film I hope I can create a stronger message as racism still does occur in school and hopefully this helps reinforce the changes that need to happen for generations to come and can use this film as guidance and therefore get this message across. The target demographic will be primarily of students, and I will aim to have links and references of actor choice to typical students and therefore create a clear link to my demographic. And as my demographic is typically students they will most likely be aspires, therefore, I will aim to get a wider demographic with key conventions and link the main character to that psychographic in order to really target my target market. Due to my film taking place in western culture I plan to aim it towards ABC1 audience in order to get the widest target market possible that understand some of the concepts better due to them also living in western environments.

Within the trailer, I will use key theorists to convey the narrative within the trailer such as Todorov's Theory of Equilibrium to fit the typical key conventions of a Coming of Age film as it begins with a state of Equilibrium which will lead to
disruption of that order which will cause a recognition of that disorder that has occurred which ultimately leads to a attempt to repair the damage of the disruption and finally to a restoration of a new equilibrium, and hopefully my movie epitomises that.

I will meet the brief by having clearly identified elements of the film’s narrative in line with the conventions of film trailers, clear identification of genre codes and conventions, clear use of the conventions of trailers such as having movie release date and small snippets to explain the narrative, The creation of exposition and establishing of narrative conflicts. For example, I will create two selling articles varying from a range of film posters, as well as creating one trailer that will perfectly describe the story line of this film as well as make the audience be interested to watch the film once it is released as well have these posters and trailers to support my movie as much as possible in order to reach my target audience of ABC1.
