Film Noir - A style or genre of cinematographic film marked by a mood of pessimism, fatalism, and menace.


Film Noir movies and Neo-Noir movies are known to be extremely dark and use minimal lighting therefore several people tend to call it black and white films.. Mainly low key lighting is used to emphasise the dark and the light tones of the film and high key is used to create mystery as there is no obvious explanation as to why several things happen in the film until after it has occurred causing major suspense and mystery.


When describing Film noir they are several terms people tend to use to describe film noir such as, A foggy background, Shadowy figures (Back-light), Grainy Film style, The graphic novel aesthetic (neo-noir)



The Big Sleep (1946)

The movie "The Big Sleep" is a film noir made in 1946 is a detective story which revolves around a detective as most noir films are, who is hired by a rich family to solve a case yet is not told much, this leads to him finding death, blackmail, and love throughout the movie.

The aspects, of film noir seen throughout the movie, as a detective is put on a case alone with little knowledge, a femme fatal which is the main interest of the protagonist, a series of possible suspects, a chase scene involving loud pistols and a twist ending. This are all key aspects of film noir research therefore males this film quite recognisable due to the key characteristics that make this film a film noir. This film is also quite well known as film noir due to the fact that this was made in 1946 where they were quite famous and therefore had some of the best films out at that time.
