Lighting Still Image Analysis

Within this picture, you can see a clear use of backlighting and filler lighting to create a low key lighting effect as all the left is coming from the left side to shine on the right side of her face. the use of showing only half her face creates a mysterious effect. The use of the light coming from the back makes the cigarette smoke around her look very strong and therefore entices the audience as to why she is by herself in a relatively dark room smoking a cigarette.

Once again this still image has used low key lighting as the only clear light we can see being used is a top lighting this creates another ominous and mysterious effect. The use of top lighting means the only areas we can see the lady is her face. The use of only showing her face makes us the viewer question as to why the director has created the effect of us only being able to look at her face and no other parts of the body.

The lighting in this shot is high key lighting as his body from the angle we are given is quite well lit up however we are left to ponder as to why he looks quite shocked and stunned due to his facial expression. As when the most use of a key light is to create a sense of realism, however, the actor does not give any information as to why he looks like that.

The lighting in this shot is low key lighting as clearly we can only see a key light and backlights used to create the effect on the actor. the use of the strong, lighting and his location being outside at dark hours allows us the viewer to believe only from his facial expression and must understand from only his facial expression.

From this shot, it is most evident that this is High key lighting as the light and dark spaces are clearly seen within the shot. The characters are all outlines with a back-light creating the large shadow, the light is also used to only make the characters recognizable by their stature and not by how they appear, this may be due to the director wanting the characters to all seem menacing no matter how scary or big they may be.
