Moonlight (2016)

Talk about it

The expectations that I have on the main character is he will be a character who will be struggling to make friends in the neighbourhood. His family will not really care about him and his Mum will not really support him in school and academically. He also finds it difficult in school to learn from the teachers because he is always getting bullied by the other kids in the school because of his sexuality. I think that the film should the hardship and struggle that chiron went through to help build up his courage and change his life's desire from him being bullied in school into changing his path and becoming a new and innovated person, this is done by the use of his past having a effect on him in the current time

I think this film is going to be a sad and sympathetic film which is set in an American city. It is going to show how a young black man to struggles to discover is identity and sexuality because he had no support from his family but he was trying to get help from people in the neighbourhood. A young couple trying to help the young boy by teaching him a few things about life.

Discussion points

Chiron doesn't speak much because he is quite scared and nervous and he doesn't really know what to say because he is talking to strangers. This is also because he is struggling to discover his identity and sexuality. The three characters use different emotions to convey the emotions of Chiron to the audience. Such as the man at the table kept on sighing and shrugging his shoulders  because he was struggling to communicate with the young black man. This tells the audience that Chiron's emotions are quite delicate and he is petrified.  Also, when the women was speaking to him she kept saying individual words and most of the time the air was filled with silence which showed that Chiron was quite scared and didn't know what to say. He is reluctant to make eye contact with people because it is his way of communicating and also at this point he hasn't discovered his sexuality or identity because he hasn't had any support or guidance from his mother.

I think that the Miami setting was good and the thing that I found surprising about the area was that the area was not that populated and majority of the streets were quite empty due to them going to the suburbs of Miami where they do not tend to have lot of money. Also, some of the houses were quite dismantled and there were quite a lot of poverty around. The film make wasn't just trying to convey the colours from the setting but also the character emotions which mostly dull colours because the situation was quite sympathetic and by having quite a few dark scenes means that our emotions and feelings towards Chrion and quite sad and tragedy based due to how puch pain and suffering he was going through at the start of the film.

Juan is a significant character in the film because he is the man who found the young black man in the building when he was running away from the kids who were bullying him. He was the fist character who had supported the young black man and had tought him a few things about living life. He was the character that had argued against the boys Mum and told her that she needs to take care of her son. So, Juan was a very significant character in the film even though he only appeared in the beginning of the film.

I think that the film maker made lots of scenes near the beach because he wanted to reflect the setting of the movie which was Miami. Miami is known for it's beautiful beaches and the lovely scenery that takes place when the sun sets and rises. Also, the beach is a place where people go to in the evening where they can reflect on what has happened in the day and also just to think about things. Finally, the beach is also a romantic place for some people.

In my opinion, nothing surprised me about Chiron in the final chapter. I think that Kevin is being very true to himself before and after with Kevin on his reunion. Because he said that he would come to the restaurant one day and he did when he needed support and guidance and Kevin had.helped as well. I think that Chiron  had changed at the end of the movie because he had finally found out his identity and sexuality. I think that some of the nicknames that Chiron was know for was quite rude and horrible.

Write about it

I think that the film was a very good film because it helped us as the audience fell sympathetic for the young black man because he was trying find help on how to discover his identity and sexuality.  I think that the film told us clearly that they were showing three parts to his life. But, I think the animations were good because they were quite rough which was symbolising and reflecting the life of the young black man and how he was struggling. In my opinion, I think that I would give the film and 4 star because it covered all the aspects of a goof film but I think that there could have been some improvements being made.

I think that the improvements that could have been made is that there were some unnecessary scenes in the film such as there was a over the shoulder shot which was showing the young black man grown up and he was walking to the restaurant which his friend who was a chef had invited him to. Also, I think at the beginning the same scene was repeated twice. This scene was when the guy who helped the young black man had got out of the car and had gone to some and had shaked his friends hand. I think that this scene could have been changed to something different. The only difference in the scene was that the first was in the day time but the second one was in the dark.

Extension activities

A couple of years later Chiron starts to get used to his surroundings. He also doesn't get picked on by the people in the neighbourhood because he had learnt earlier in his life on how to defend himself and build himself up as a strong and tough character. In Chiron's spare time he likes to do physical activity, so he likes to play football with his friends. This is also helps him make better friends that will help and support him. With Chiron making new friends will help him develop new relationships which will give great confidence.

Also, as Chiron gets older he starts to communicate with people by talking and he responds to people when they ask him question. As the audience we know that he was very shy and scared and he wouldn't really talk to strangers and his way of communicating with the characters was using his emotions and eye contact. This was because he was struggling to discover his identity and sexuality and nobody was really supporting him with that.

So, Chiron has changed from when he was young and he is much confident and I hope that he can bring down those barriers and really try to express himself.
