1) Write a one-sentence definition of what makes a film British.

If a film is about Britsh culture - includes diverse culture, has British actors and is filmed in Britain.


2) What is the difference between a Hollywood production context and production context of a British film?

Hollywood films have high budgets, a heavy reliance on celebrities both in cast and crew and spectacle-driven stories. British films do have this Hollywood culture but also have to include British culture and films. They also have a different independent production context such as low budgets, character rather than spectacle-driven stories and a heavier reliance on word of mouth and viral advertising.


3) When did the James Bond franchise start?

During the 1960s where cultural norms were shifted and more American involvement in money and talent.


4) In terms of film censorship and graphic content, what began to change in British film in the 1970s and 1980s?

There was a domination on video nasties banning.


5) What groups are often represented in British film? Give examples of films these groups feature in.

A variety of films fueled stereotypes of youths being rule breaking rebels that tends towards violence. This was the focus of anti-establishment and a compulsion to act in a anarchic way e.g. Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange(1971), Eden Lake(2008). Though, there has been an alternative representation of youths that is deeper and more realistic than the threat of the rebel, such as in 'Attack The Block'(2011).

There was a new wave with women in the 1960s treated through social realism. They were either portrayed in the common stereotype of the virgin, the mother or the whore. But the inequality regarding women has been identifies from the 1980s.



6) What does the Factsheet suggest might be the audience appeal of British film?

The audience generally appeal to British Actors that are identifiable through the genre of the film e.g. High Grant being identifies for Rom-Coms.  There is also a keen interest with the focus on class, social life, education and more.

1) What is the 'cultural test' to see if a film counts as British?

If the film doesn't quality as a co-production, it must pass he British Film Institutes's Cultural Test in order to be defined as British. It's divided into 4 sections and has to score at least 16/31 points. The four sections are Cultural Context; Cultural Contribution(reflects diverse British culture, heritage or creativity); Cultural Hubs(British studio/filing and post-production or all areas after filming); and Cultural Practitioners(cast and crew).
